Canada is widening its push to automate basic tax filing for lower-income residents with simple tax situations ahead of the 2026 return season. Canadians who want a chance to be included in the first wave must file their 2025 return and update key CRA account settings by Oct. 31, 2026.
Highlights
- Up to one million Canadians will receive invitations in March 2027 for pre-filled 2026 tax returns via their CRA account, based on eligibility criteria.
- The CRA requires eligible individuals to file their 2025 tax return by Oct. 31, 2026, maintain a CRA account, and select electronic mail correspondence.
- The pre-filled tax return program aims to expand to 5.5 million people by March 2029, improving benefit access for lower-income and non-taxable residents.
Eligibility rules and filing timeline
As reported by MoneySense, citing the Canada Revenue Agency, up to one million eligible Canadians will begin receiving invitations in March 2027 to review and submit a pre-filled 2026 tax return through their CRA account. The agency says the service uses information already on file to complete most of the return, while users must verify the details, add any missing information and then file it.The measure was outlined in Budget 2025 as one of the CRA's automatic tax filing initiatives. The agency says people may be considered if they file their 2025 tax return by Oct. 31, 2026, have a lower income and a simple non-taxable situation, maintain a CRA account and choose electronic mail as their correspondence preference.
The CRA says meeting those criteria does not guarantee an invitation. In a consultation report released earlier in the summer, the agency says pre-filled returns are expected to be due by April 30, 2027, giving recipients at least six weeks to review them.
Benefit access and broader rollout
This pre-filled filing campaign differs from the government's proposed deemed filing pilot, under which the CRA would submit a return on a person's behalf. That separate measure remains at the proposal stage and still requires parliamentary approval. The agency has not published a specific income cutoff for the program, but lower-income status can be assessed against Statistics Canada's low-income measure after tax thresholds, which vary by household size. The CRA says annual tax filing is necessary for federal payments including the Canada Child Benefit, the Canada Groceries and Essentials Benefit and the GST/HST credit, as well as for access to some provincial and territorial programs.
The service is scheduled to expand further after the initial launch. The CRA says the pre-filled return program is set to reach up to 5.5 million people by March 2029, broadening access for residents who do not owe tax but still need to file in order to receive government benefits.
Our earlier report on Pakistan’s Tax Year 2026 income tax filing deadline covered growing calls for the Federal Board of Revenue to extend the submission window after the final return form notification and ongoing technical issues on the IRIS portal. The piece outlined arguments from tax experts and business groups that taxpayers need more time to comply, and highlighted requests to resolve pending extension applications to avoid penalties and filing disruptions.
