IBM stock holds key support as recovery continues
IBM stock continues to recover from its July sell-off, holding above the key $230 area despite a weak trading session on August 6. The previously identified $244 target remains valid, while a sustained move above it could open the way to a broader recovery.
On August 6, IBM fell 1.06% to $233.43, but the decline came amid broader weakness in the U.S. equity market: the Dow Jones lost 0.85%, while the S&P 500 declined 0.18%. At the same time, no new negative corporate catalyst emerged. This suggests that the pullback is more likely a period of short-term profit-taking after the recovery from July lows rather than a renewed wave of selling.

Recovery setup remains intact while $230 holds
The previously outlined scenario has partially materialized. After decisively breaking above resistance near $230, IBM shares continued higher and approached $240, although the $244 target has not yet been reached. A moderate pullback followed. The base-case scenario therefore remains largely unchanged. Holding $230 would preserve the probability of another attempt toward $244. A successful breakout above this level could extend the recovery toward the $260–270 area, where the 50-day and 200-day SMAs are located.
A break below $230 would weaken the short-term structure and increase the probability of a return toward $220. For now, however, this scenario appears less likely.
IBM recovery may require time or a stronger catalyst
Despite the improving short-term technical picture, the current move still looks more like a recovery from the sharp July decline than the beginning of a full return toward previous highs.Even if IBM establishes a sustained position above $244 and continues toward $260–270, the stock would remain well below its previous peaks. A return to those levels would likely require either a prolonged period of gradual recovery or a stronger fundamental catalyst capable of materially improving investor expectations for IBM’s growth outlook.
