Can Defence expansion strengthen Rolls-Royce shares momentum?
A range breakout could define the next move.

Rolls-Royce continues to hold support at GBX 1,510, but buyers have yet to retest the all-time high near GBX 1,586. Fresh Defence developments support the fundamental backdrop, although they have so far failed to provide enough momentum for a breakout from the newly established trading range.

Rolls-Royce announced an expanded partnership with Marand Precision Engineering and the opening of a regional Defence headquarters in Canberra. The new office will serve as a strategic hub for the company’s operations in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and South Korea, while also supporting projects under AUKUS.

As part of the expanded cooperation, Marand also received an order to manufacture three additional acoustic enclosures and ship interface systems for gas turbine installations used in the Type 26 Global Combat Ship program.

Shares consolidate between GBX 1,510 and GBX 1,586

The previously outlined scenario did not materialize. Rolls-Royce shares failed to hold above GBX 1,550 and retest the all-time high near GBX 1,586.

GBX 1,510 remains the key support. The shares have therefore formed a new short-term trading range between GBX 1,510 and GBX 1,586, and a decisive break of either boundary will likely determine the next short-term move.

The medium-term target remains the GBX 1,600–1,650 area.

UK GDP data fails to unlock upside momentum

Preliminary UK GDP data for the second quarter were released on August 13. According to the Office for National Statistics, the economy expanded 0.4% quarter over quarter, matching expectations and slowing from 0.6% in the first quarter. On an annual basis, growth accelerated to 1.2% from 0.9%, exceeding expectations of 1.1%.

Despite the relatively resilient macroeconomic data, the release failed to give the shares enough momentum to break above the record high at GBX 1,586. The expanded partnership with Marand Precision Engineering and the new Defence headquarters in Canberra also provide a supportive company-specific backdrop, but have yet to translate into a decisive price breakout.
