Volkswagen partnership and recalls reshape sentiment amid global expansion

Rivian Automotive reported new institutional investment activity in the second quarter, including stakes from Volkswagen and Uber as part of a $300 million robotaxi partnership. The company is expanding abroad with the launch of its R2 SUV, targeting both U.S. and European markets, and has identified the UK as integral to its European plans. Over 31,000 R1S and R1T vehicles were recently recalled in the U.S. due to faulty turn signal lamps, while insiders disclosed share sales and tax-withholding events. A unified software update is also being developed for its vehicle lineup.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees Rivian's recent pop as largely sentiment-driven, with shaky underpinnings. He highlights that the price remains below key moving averages, signaling persistent weakness despite news of institutional deals and new product launches. Technical signals, including bearish MACD and oversold oscillators, cast doubt on any sustainable rally. Recalls and insider sales further cloud near-term prospects and reflect a cautious investor mood. "Despite a temporary bounce, I see elevated risks and limited conviction in a real recovery at current levels," he states.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, remains constructive on Rivian's medium-term outlook. He points to renewed institutional confidence from big names like Volkswagen and Uber, as well as ambitious international growth plans with the R2 SUV. The recalled vehicles, while a concern, do not overshadow robust strategic partnerships. Karapetjanc emphasizes that markets are forward-looking and the underlying bullish structure offers multiple scenarios for further growth. "I believe Rivian’s unique positioning and capital inflows set the stage for future upside despite recent volatility," he says.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, notes short-term traders face a pivotal range this week, with strong resistance at $15.93 and immediate support at $15.25. He observes oversold momentum indicators, which may trigger brief relief rallies if sentiment turns. However, volatility remains high and the technical backdrop favors sellers unless a catalyst shifts mood. "For now, I see opportunity for nimble plays inside the projected $14.46–$16.1 band, but conviction in a sustained move is low," he says.

Oversold signals deepen as multiple bearish indicators pressure Rivian

Rivian is trading below its 20-day ($15.93), 50-day ($16.4), and 200-day ($16.22) moving averages, indicating ongoing pressure from sellers across all short-, medium-, and long-term timeframes. The nearest ceiling is at $15.93, with immediate floor support set at $15.25. Momentum indicators are firmly bearish: the Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) signals a sell, and the Average Directional Index (ADX) reads as neutral. Both the Relative Strength Index (RSI) at 39.45 and the Commodity Channel Index (CCI) at -170.74 point to oversold conditions, which is echoed by the Stochastic RSI at zero. Bull/Bear Power (BBP) shows sellers firmly in control, also projecting an oversold state. The Awesome Oscillator supports the current downside trend. Rivian gained $0.49 or 3.28% today, opening with an upside gap of about $0.34 (2.3%) and currently sits near the top of its intraday range. Intraday volatility stands at 0.79%. The tone after the open signals strength toward session highs, despite underlying bearish momentum.

Previously it was reported that Rivian stock remained under sustained selling pressure despite product updates and a stable liquidity position. The current article adds that, while a technical rebound has appeared alongside new institutional investments and overseas expansion efforts, downside risk persists in the coming sessions with $15.25 as a pivotal support level to monitor.
