Rolls-Royce stock holds GBX 1,420 as UK inflation rises to 3.1%
Rolls-Royce remains under pressure as the UK macro backdrop deteriorates, although developments around the company’s key defence programmes remain supportive. Attention now turns to whether an important technical support level can hold.
The U.S. Air Force reported further progress on the B-52 modernization programme. The Commercial Engine Replacement Program, which uses Rolls-Royce F130 engines, previously received Milestone B approval and moved into the Engineering and Manufacturing Development phase. The overall programme is valued at approximately $20.2 billion.
The macroeconomic backdrop, meanwhile, has worsened. ONS data released on September 16 showed that UK CPI inflation accelerated to 3.1% year over year in August from 2.9%, while prices rose 0.5% month over month. Transport, particularly motor fuels, was the main contributor to the increase. Core inflation remained at 2.6%, while services inflation stood at 3.4%.

A break below GBX 1,420 keeps bearish pressure alive
Rolls-Royce shares are holding above important support at GBX 1,420. Macroeconomic and geopolitical risks, however, remain elevated.
The bearish setup outlined earlier therefore remains relevant. A decisive break and sustained move below GBX 1,420 could trigger a decline toward the next major support around GBX 1,380.
A break above GBX 1,450 would invalidate this scenario. In that case, the next target would be the 50-day SMA near GBX 1,470, where a descending trendline is also located. A move through that area would open the way toward the psychological GBX 1,500 resistance level.
Defence progress offsets a tougher macro backdrop
The fundamental picture remains mixed. Progress on the F130 programme supports the long-term outlook for Defence, while accelerating UK inflation and persistent external risks keep the possibility of a deeper correction in play.
In the short term, GBX 1,420 therefore remains the key level. Losing this support would strengthen the bearish case and put GBX 1,380 in focus, while a recovery above GBX 1,450 would provide the first signal that momentum is beginning to improve.
