BofA raises its chip-market outlook as AMD tests key resistance

After several sharp reversals, AMD is once again approaching a level that could shift the short-term balance. The question now is whether buyers have enough momentum to drive the next move.

Bank of America increased its projection for the 2030 global semiconductor market to $3.2 trillion from $2.7 trillion. The bank's analysts said they are not observing slowing orders, long-term contracts, capacity expansion or pricing of AI-chips. AMD is still one of the companies likely to benefit from the continued investment cycle of AI infrastructure.

AMD also highlighted progress around Helios, its first rack-scale AI system designed for large AI data centers, as well as ROCm.AI and the integration of local Ryzen AI systems with Instinct infrastructure.

$527 becomes the key level for today

AMD partially played out the bearish scenario outlined earlier. The stock entered a correction but stopped at $480.33 before reaching the $478 target. It then rebounded and tested $527.

For today’s session, that level becomes the key threshold. If the regular session opens above $527 and the price manages to hold there, the probability of a move toward the psychological $550 resistance level would increase noticeably. This remains the base-case scenario for today.

A break and sustained move below $506 would invalidate the setup. In that case, AMD could retest the $500–493 area, where horizontal support converges with the 50-day SMA.

AI optimism now meets a tougher rate backdrop

Fundamental demand for AI infrastructure remains the main argument in AMD’s favor, but the external backdrop has become more challenging. The Fed raised rates by 25 basis points to 3.75–4.00% on September 16, keeping pressure from elevated yields on richly valued technology stocks.

Strong industry expectations are therefore colliding with tighter financial conditions. For AMD, that makes buyer reaction around current levels especially important, as the next move will depend on whether AI optimism can outweigh pressure from rates and Treasury yields.
