Intel rally extends above $120 as overbought RSI raises profit-taking risk
After a parabolic move higher, the market is beginning to focus less on Intel’s upside potential and more on whether the momentum can be sustained. The higher the stock climbs, the more important the strength of underlying demand becomes.
The main fundamental driver behind Intel remains rising expectations for demand for central processing units used in AI infrastructure. Yahoo Finance noted that the shares gained roughly 25% over five trading sessions amid growing interest in agentic AI and the expanding role of CPUs in data centers.
Another factor has been a Digitimes report suggesting that Intel could raise CPU prices by around 10%. At the same time, investors continue to track the development of the company’s foundry business and the prospect of securing external customers.

Intel rally raises the risk of profit-taking near current levels
The base-case scenario from the previous analysis has played out in full. Intel shares reached the $114 target and extended their advance, ending the September 22 session at $123.86.
From the intraday low recorded on September 14, the stock has risen by roughly 31%. After such a substantial move, the likelihood of short-term profit-taking has increased considerably.
Still, opening a short position solely because of the scale of the rally would be premature. The first confirmation of a potential reversal should come from the formation of a doji candle on elevated trading volume.
RSI (14) has already moved into overbought territory. Combined with a confirming candlestick pattern, this would provide an additional signal that a correction may be starting. In that case, the first downside target would be support around $117.50.
A breakout and sustained move above $126.70 would invalidate this scenario. In that case, bullish momentum could accelerate further, opening the way toward $132.75.
Strong AI narrative now faces a higher bar
Intel’s fundamental backdrop remains supportive. Rising demand for CPUs used in AI workloads and renewed interest in the company’s foundry strategy continue to underpin its investment case. However, a significant portion of those expectations has already been reflected rapidly in the share price.
That makes fresh catalysts increasingly important after such a strong advance. If the rally continues without new company-specific developments to support it, the stock could become progressively more sensitive to profit-taking, particularly with RSI already in overbought territory.
