Pennsylvania is adding to its push to expand life sciences manufacturing as GSK plans a major buildout at its Upper Merion site. The project is set to combine manufacturing, research and digital operations in Montgomery County while creating more than 300 jobs over the next five years.

Highlights

  • GSK will invest more than $800 million beginning in 2027 to expand its Upper Merion site into a biopharmaceutical hub supporting both clinical and commercial biologics production.
  • The project will generate over 300 new jobs and retain around 4,500 existing full-time roles in Pennsylvania, with GSK eligible for manufacturing tax incentives.
  • GSK's Upper Merion expansion combined with its Lancaster County project represent nearly $1.7 billion in planned investment, reinforcing Pennsylvania's strategy to attract biopharma activity.

Investment plan and project timeline

As reported by Reuters, citing Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro's office, GSK will invest more than $800 million to expand its Upper Merion operations into a biopharmaceutical manufacturing and research hub.

The company says construction is planned to begin in 2027, and the site is designed to support both clinical and commercial production of biologic medicines. The project includes a new commercial-scale biologics manufacturing facility, a research pilot plant and a centralized quality-control laboratory.

GSK, whose U.S. headquarters is in Philadelphia, says the expansion will help accelerate the development and supply of future medicines.

Jobs, tax incentives and state impact

The expansion is expected to create more than 300 new jobs and retain about 4,500 existing full-time jobs in Pennsylvania. State officials also say GSK will be eligible for manufacturing tax incentives tied to the investment.

According to Pennsylvania officials, the Upper Merion expansion and GSK's previously announced Lancaster County facility project together represent nearly $1.7 billion in planned investment in the state. The combined spending reinforces Pennsylvania's effort to attract biopharma production and related research activity.

In our earlier coverage of Malaysian listed companies’ financing and investment moves, we outlined a wave of fundraising, asset deals and factory expansion plans across several sectors. We noted that firms were using rights issues and new capital spending to strengthen balance sheets and add manufacturing capacity, with a particular focus on higher value-added areas such as semiconductors and green energy.
