Asset sale and profit upgrade prompt shift in capital strategy

Tesco has announced the divestment of its Czech and Slovak operations to Ahold Delhaize for €1.7 billion. The company intends to allocate approximately €1.2 billion of the net proceeds to an expanded share buyback program, and has lifted the lower end of its full-year profit forecast to £3.15 billion. Tesco is also extending its buyback by £200 million, reflecting a strategic shift toward its UK and Irish markets.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees recent gains in Tesco as technically justified but rooted in unsustainable sentiment. He notes the divestment news and buyback expansion as positive in the short term but warns these are largely one-off drivers. Kharitonov finds the overreliance on buybacks and profit forecast hikes concerning, especially given ongoing sectoral headwinds. He points out that neutral RSI and an oversold Stochastic RSI signal exhaustion risk. "Despite the current rally, I remain cautious — the risk of reversal increases if momentum fades or support at GBX542 breaks," he says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, highlights Tesco's strategic asset sale and aggressive buyback as clear value drivers. He believes the company is demonstrating effective capital recycling and management focus by shifting to core UK and Irish markets. Karapetjanc underscores that the bullish structure remains intact across all timeframes. "Tesco is well-positioned for further growth — expanding buybacks and upgraded profit targets create a solid platform for continued outperformance," he states.
Parshwa Turakhiya, analyst, views Tesco's short-term sentiment as positive but closely aligned with key technical triggers. He observes that buyers control the intraday action, though the oversold Stochastic RSI introduces a bounce risk. Turakhiya sees sideways consolidation possible, with sharp moves likely on breaks above GBX549.16 or below GBX542. "I'm watching for a volatility-driven setup — momentum-linked breakout or mean-reversion will define the next trade," he remarks.

Bullish signals prevail as momentum and support align

Tesco is trading above its 20-day (GBX527.8), 50-day (GBX494.41), and 200-day (GBX473.62) moving averages, signaling strong bullish momentum over the short, medium, and long term. The immediate resistance is at GBX549.16 (week high), with nearest support at GBX542 (today high), and the bullish structure is confirmed by the 50-day versus 200-day alignment. Momentum indicators are constructive: both MACD and ADX support robust upward momentum. RSI and CCI remain neutral, while the Stochastic RSI is in the oversold zone, indicating potential for a short-term rebound. BBP is positive at 15.73, suggesting buyers dominate intraday action. Price action is strong toward the day highs, aligned with the broader momentum signals except for Stochastic RSI's potential rebound risk.

Earlier, analysts noted that Tesco’s consolidation of core operations and commitment to share buybacks provided a supportive backdrop for sustained technical strength. The latest divestment and expanded buyback program reinforce this bullish setup, with traders now focused on whether a clear move above GBX549.16 will trigger further upside momentum in the coming sessions.
