IG secures FCA crypto license, becomes first UK-listed firm on register
IG, an investing and trading platform, has obtained a cryptoasset licence from the UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), paving the way for a broader expansion of its cryptocurrency-related services. With this approval, IG has become the first UK-registered company to be included in the FCA’s official cryptoasset register.

IG first entered the cryptocurrency market in June, offering trading through a partnership with Uphold, an FCA-registered firm. Now, with its own licence secured, IG plans to introduce direct cryptoasset transfers to and from its platform, expand the range of supported tokens, and enhance pricing transparency for clients.
The company noted that existing users of its crypto service will be automatically migrated to the IG platform in the coming weeks, with no action required on their part.
Management comment and licence significance
Michael Healy, UK Managing Director at IG, described the licence as a turning point:
“This is an important step forward for IG as we continue to expand our offering for UK investors. The FCA licence not only allows us to provide a wider range of crypto services but also gives our customers greater flexibility and control.”
Healy added that the company looks forward to working closely with the FCA, enhancing its product portfolio, and leveraging IG’s five decades of market experience to support the growth of the UK’s digital asset ecosystem.
New opportunities and market development
The new licence will enable IG to diversify its crypto portfolio and meet the rising demand from UK investors seeking regulated access to digital assets. This move is also part of the company’s broader strategy to integrate traditional and digital markets within a single platform.
Following the launch of its crypto platform, IG customers can now trade multiple asset classes — including stocks, indices, ETFs, forex, commodities, derivatives, and cryptocurrencies — all in one place, offering convenience and flexibility without the need to rely on multiple providers.
The FCA licence marks a major milestone in IG’s development and highlights the growing maturity of the regulated crypto sector in the United Kingdom.
