Natural gas stabilizes above support as storage outlook offsets geopolitical premium
Natural gas

Natural gas remains under pressure despite signs of stabilization near the $2.80 area. The latest U.S. Energy Information Administration report showed another inventory build, keeping storage comfortably above the seasonal average even though the weekly injection came in slightly below market expectations.

Healthy inventories continue to reassure traders that domestic supply remains adequate, limiting the impact of stronger summer cooling demand across large parts of the United States.

Middle East tensions support global LNG prices

While U.S. natural gas fundamentals remain relatively comfortable, international gas markets continue to reflect elevated geopolitical risk. The conflict in the Middle East has increased uncertainty surrounding LNG shipping routes and supply security, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz. European benchmark gas prices have climbed sharply over recent weeks as utilities compete with Asian buyers for available LNG cargoes ahead of the winter storage season. This divergence has provided indirect support for U.S. natural gas by strengthening global LNG pricing, although ample North American inventories have prevented a comparable rally in Henry Hub futures.

Macro environment remains mixed for energy demand

Recent U.S. macroeconomic data continue to support expectations that the Federal Reserve is approaching the end of its restrictive policy cycle, improving the medium-term outlook for industrial activity and energy consumption. At the same time, investors remain cautious as slowing global manufacturing activity and weaker economic growth expectations continue to weigh on forecasts for natural gas demand. Weather forecasts remain an important short-term catalyst, with persistent heat waves capable of increasing electricity demand and accelerating gas-fired power generation during the remainder of the summer.

Technical outlook remains cautious despite stabilization

The hourly chart shows natural gas attempting to establish a base after the sharp selloff from above $3.20. Prices continue to trade below the long-term moving average, confirming that the broader technical structure remains bearish despite recent consolidation. Buyers have managed to defend the area around $2.80 several times, but momentum remains limited. A sustained move above the $2.90 to $2.95 resistance zone would improve the near-term outlook and could trigger a stronger recovery. As I warned in Natural gas struggles to recover as abundant supply caps upside, failure to hold above current support would increase the risk of another decline toward the recent lows as sellers regain control.
