Canada refined petroleum sales continue to rise as aviation fuel leads 2025 growth
Aviation fuels 2025 growth

Canadian end-user sales of refined petroleum products reach 89.7 million cubic metres in 2025, rising 1.0% from 2024 as transportation demand remains the main driver. Aviation fuel records the fastest growth among major products, while motor gasoline and diesel continue to account for more than four-fifths of total volumes.

Highlights

  • Statistics Canada reports 2025 refined petroleum sales to end-users rise as aviation turbo fuel jumps 6.3% to 9.2 million cubic metres.
  • Motor gasoline sales increase 0.4% to 43.7 million cubic metres and diesel fuel oil grows 0.7% to 29.4 million cubic metres, making up 48.8% and 32.7% of total sales, respectively.
  • Air transportation sector fuel sales increase 5.9% to 7.9 million cubic metres in 2025, with Ontario, Quebec, and British Columbia receiving 33.0%, 27.4%, and 20.0% of volumes.

Fuel demand trends across major products

As reported by Statistics Canada, total sales to end-users increase in 2025 as gains in aviation turbo fuel, motor gasoline and diesel fuel oil lift overall refined petroleum demand. Motor gasoline sales edge up 0.4% to 43.7 million cubic metres, while diesel fuel oil rises 0.7% to 29.4 million cubic metres.

These two products remain the backbone of the market, with motor gasoline accounting for 48.8% of total refined petroleum product sales and diesel fuel oil making up 32.7%. Aviation turbo fuel reaches 9.2 million cubic metres, up 6.3% from a year earlier, while light fuel oil, or heating oil, increases 3.2% to 1.4 million cubic metres.

At the retail distribution level, 15.8 million cubic metres of motor gasoline are sold to gasoline stations in 2025, up 0.4% from the previous year. Diesel fuel oil sales to gasoline stations rise more quickly, up 4.1% to 2.4 million cubic metres.

Transportation sectors support national volumes

Road and air transportation continue to anchor refined fuel consumption in Canada, though growth differs by segment. Sales of all fuels to the road transportation industry edge up 0.3% from 2024 to 6.7 million cubic metres in 2025.

Air transportation posts a stronger increase, with total fuel sales to the sector rising 5.9% to 7.9 million cubic metres. Ontario receives 33.0% of those sales, followed by Quebec at 27.4% and British Columbia at 20.0%.

Statistics Canada says end-use estimates are approximated from reported refinery sales and import volumes, and the data remain subject to revision. End-user categories are classified in line with the North American Industry Classification System.

In our earlier report on the surge in crude oil shipping costs, we explained how conflict-related risks on key tanker routes pushed freight and insurance rates sharply higher, making transport a much larger component of oil pricing. We also noted that these added logistics costs can filter through to retail fuel prices and broader consumer inflation, with import-dependent markets and spot buyers facing the biggest immediate impact.
