AMD expands AI ambitions with major Anthropic investment
Advanced Micro Devices said on Wednesday it will invest up to $5 billion in artificial intelligence startup Anthropic as the companies expand their partnership to build large-scale AI computing infrastructure. The agreement also secures a major deployment of AMD chips, underscoring the growing competition among technology companies to supply the computing power behind advanced AI models.
Highlights
- AMD will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic.
- Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD GPUs.
- Deployment starts next year.
- AI infrastructure spending continues to accelerate.
According to CNBC, Anthropic will deploy 2 gigawatts of AMD Instinct MI450 Series graphics processing units in the company's Helios rack-scale systems. The first gigawatt is expected to come online during the first half of next year.
AI infrastructure becomes the next battleground
The investment strengthens AMD's position in the rapidly growing AI hardware market, where it competes directly with Nvidia. While Nvidia remains the dominant supplier of AI accelerators, AMD has secured partnerships with several leading AI developers, including OpenAI, and now a significantly expanded relationship with Anthropic.
For Anthropic, the agreement is part of a broader effort to increase computing capacity as demand for its Claude AI models continues to rise. Earlier this year, the company acknowledged that growing usage had strained its infrastructure, leading to reliability and performance issues during peak periods.
The deployment of 2 gigawatts of GPU capacity represents one of the largest announced AI infrastructure projects involving AMD and highlights the increasing scale of computing resources required to train and operate frontier AI models.
Anthropic continues expanding compute capacity
The AMD partnership follows several major infrastructure agreements announced by Anthropic in 2026. In May, the company reached a deal with SpaceX to use the full computing capacity of the Colossus 1 data center in Memphis, agreeing to pay $1.25 billion per month through May 2029.
Anthropic also signed multi-billion-dollar agreements with Amazon and a multi-gigawatt computing partnership with Google and Broadcom. CNBC has also reported that the company is in preliminary discussions with Meta about leasing additional computing capacity.
Competition shifts toward computing scale
The agreement highlights how competition in artificial intelligence is increasingly centered on access to computing infrastructure rather than software alone. As AI models become larger and more computationally intensive, developers are committing tens of billions of dollars to secure long-term GPU capacity and data center resources.
For AMD, the investment provides another opportunity to expand its presence in a market largely dominated by Nvidia. For Anthropic, it adds another major source of computing power as the company seeks to support growing demand for Claude while reducing infrastructure bottlenecks.
