Nvidia expands AI infrastructure network in Australia
Nvidia targets 2 GW of AI capacity in Australia

Nvidia is expanding its AI infrastructure footprint in Australia through partnerships with major data center and cloud providers, targeting as much as 2 gigawatts of capacity by 2027. The buildout is designed to give Australian companies, researchers, and AI developers greater access to high-performance computing without relying as heavily on infrastructure located overseas.

Highlights

  • Nvidia partners target up to 2 GW by 2027.
  • Sharon AI plans to deploy up to 68,000 Nvidia GPUs.
  • Nvidia DSX will underpin multiple Australian AI facilities.
  • Local compute capacity will serve business and research.

According to the press release, Nvidia is working with Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk. The partners will operate AI facilities built around Nvidia DSX infrastructure, while Nvidia supplies accelerated computing, networking, software, and technical ecosystem support.

Nvidia builds out Australian AI capacity

The expansion puts Nvidia technology at the center of several large infrastructure projects. Sharon AI plans to deploy as many as 68,000 Nvidia GPUs, connected through Nvidia Quantum InfiniBand and Spectrum-X Ethernet networking.

IREN is combining Nvidia DSX architecture with its own power, land, and data center operations, including an 800-megawatt campus in South Australia. CDC, meanwhile, already operates more than 550 megawatts of capacity across Australia and New Zealand and has another 800 megawatts under construction.

The projects also illustrate how AI is changing data center design. Operators are deploying high-density infrastructure and direct-to-chip liquid cooling as newer generations of accelerators require substantially more power and specialized thermal management.

From computing capacity to local AI

Nvidia is also tying the infrastructure expansion to its software and model ecosystem. Australian organizations will gain wider access to accelerated computing and Nvidia Nemotron open models for developing applications and AI agents locally.

Atlassian is using Nvidia technology for its Rovo enterprise search products, while healthcare technology company Heidi is combining Nemotron models with its clinical AI systems.

That broadens Nvidia's role beyond selling GPUs. Its DSX platform spans computing, networking, software, and data center reference designs, allowing Nvidia to influence how increasingly large AI facilities are constructed and operated.

Australia becomes a larger AI infrastructure market

The planned 2-gigawatt buildout by 2027 would significantly expand Australia's capacity to train and deploy AI models domestically. For Nvidia, it also creates another regional market for successive generations of its accelerated computing systems.

Power availability, cooling, and data center capacity are increasingly determining where AI workloads can grow. By working directly with Australian infrastructure operators, Nvidia is positioning its hardware and software stack deeper inside that physical layer of the AI economy.
