OpenAI weighs new funding ahead of IPO
OpenAI weighs funding at over $1.2 trillion

OpenAI is in early discussions about raising fresh capital at a valuation exceeding $1.2 trillion, a deal that could give the ChatGPT maker greater flexibility over the timing of its planned public offering. The talks come as competition among the largest artificial intelligence companies increasingly extends from models and computing capacity to private capital and public markets.

Highlights

  • OpenAI is discussing funding at a valuation above $1.2 trillion.
  • The talks are preliminary and were initiated by investors.
  • New capital could delay the planned IPO by one or two quarters.

The discussions were initiated by investors and remain preliminary, with any fundraising decision closely tied to when OpenAI chooses to go public, Bloomberg reported. Chief Executive Sam Altman has indicated that the long-anticipated IPO remains planned but will not take place this year.

Fresh capital could give OpenAI more time

Another private funding round could allow OpenAI to postpone its listing by one or two quarters while maintaining access to capital. The company is also considering the restrictions governing what information it could disclose to private investors as it approaches an IPO.

Additional funding could support acquisitions. OpenAI has already spent billions of dollars buying companies, including io, the AI hardware startup founded by Apple veteran Jony Ive, and Astral, which develops Python tools.

A valuation above $1.2 trillion would also place OpenAI ahead of Anthropic based on their latest private funding benchmarks. Anthropic raised capital in May at a $965 billion valuation, including the new investment.

AI rivals race toward public markets

The potential financing comes as leading AI companies prepare for a new phase in their competition. Anthropic is pursuing its own IPO and has selected Nasdaq as its listing venue, with a transaction potentially taking place as soon as October.

The Claude developer is seeking an offering that could match or exceed the scale of SpaceX, which raised a record $86.3 billion in June. OpenAI, by contrast, has more room to decide whether another private round would be preferable before exposing itself to public-market scrutiny.

Longtime OpenAI investors could also use a new round to increase their holdings before an eventual listing. That would further concentrate enormous amounts of private capital in a small group of frontier AI companies.

A $1.2 trillion test for AI valuations

The proposed valuation would provide another measure of how aggressively investors are pricing the expected economic value of generative AI. It would put OpenAI among a very small group of companies, public or private, valued above $1 trillion.

For capital markets, the implications extend beyond OpenAI. A large financing could postpone one of the most closely watched technology IPOs while setting a new private-market benchmark for AI companies. Anthropic’s $965 billion valuation and preparations for a possible October listing show that investors may soon have competing opportunities to price the sector.

The central question is whether private investors remain willing to fund increasingly expensive AI expansion before public markets get their chance to determine what these companies are worth.

As we previously reported, OpenAI and Samsung deepen cooperation on next-generation chips.
