Anthropic raises $65 billion and overtakes OpenAI by valuation
Anthropic raised $65 billion in a Series H funding round, bringing the company’s post-money valuation to $965 billion. The proceeds are expected to be used to expand computing capacity in order to meet growing demand for its Claude chatbot and scale its product lineup.
According to Reuters, the new valuation puts Anthropic ahead of OpenAI, which was valued at $852 billion in March. This further intensifies the competition between the two companies for leadership in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence sector.
Since February, when Anthropic completed its Series G round, its valuation has more than doubled from $380 billion. The sharp increase reflects the company’s rapid rise as one of the key players in the AI race, as well as strong investor interest in companies operating at the forefront of technological development.
“Since our Series G in February, adoption has continued to grow across global enterprise customers, and our run-rate revenue crossed $47 billion earlier this month,” Anthropic said in a statement.
The private capital raise comes as the company prepares for a potential public listing, according to investors and bankers familiar with the matter. Anthropic and OpenAI are both considering entering the public markets, potentially as soon as this year, to gain access to the capital needed to acquire computing resources, support their services and train new models.
Who led the round
The latest round was led by Altimeter Capital, Dragoneer, Greenoaks and Sequoia Capital. Coatue and ICONIQ also acted as co-leads.
Anthropic’s strategic infrastructure partners Micron, Samsung and SK Hynix also joined the round. The total financing includes $15 billion in previously committed investments from hyperscalers, including $5 billion from Amazon.
In April, Amazon said it planned to invest up to $25 billion in Anthropic. As part of the partnership, the AI startup committed to spending more than $100 billion over the next 10 years on Amazon’s cloud technologies. This comes on top of Amazon’s previous $8 billion investment in Anthropic.
Why Anthropic is drawing so much attention
Anthropic is a U.S.-based artificial intelligence company founded by former OpenAI employees. It develops large language models and AI systems capable of working with text, code, documents and other types of data. The company focuses on AI safety, reliability and controllability, aiming to build models that can help businesses and users with complex tasks while remaining predictable and aligned with defined constraints.
Anthropic’s flagship product is Claude, a chatbot and one of ChatGPT’s most prominent competitors. Claude is used for analyzing and generating text, programming, working with large volumes of information, preparing documents, customer support and automating business processes. The product is aimed at both individual users and enterprise clients that need AI tools to improve productivity, process data and integrate generative AI into their workflows.
As a reminder, OpenAI and Anthropic are intensifying the race among AI software developers.
