  • The agreement with WNTR Property & Hospitality, part of IGI Holding, marks Hotel101's strategic entry into Africa and follows recent expansions in Spain and Japan.
  • The Cairo project diversifies IGI Developments' portfolio into hospitality and positions Hotel101 to benefit from growing tourism and business demand in Egypt, while DoubleDragon Corp. shares closed flat at P11.70.

Cairo development plan and project scope

According to BusinessWorld, in a statement on Wednesday, Hotel101 Global Holdings Corp. said it is entering Africa through a country-wide development agreement in Egypt, beginning with Hotel101-Cairo West. The Nasdaq-listed company said the development remains subject to customary governmental, regulatory, corporate and other approvals.

The project is set on a 15,984-square-meter site along Ahmed Zewail Road in 6th of October City, Giza. Hotel101 said the property will have about 750 rooms and is expected to rank among Cairo’s three biggest hotels by room count.

The hotel will offer four-star accommodations and include facilities geared toward business events, such as a ballroom, meeting rooms and a conference center. Planned amenities include restaurants, swimming pools, a gym, a business center, a children’s playground, parking facilities and luggage storage.

Hotel101 signed the agreement with WNTR Property & Hospitality, an affiliate of IGI Holding, an Egyptian group with interests in manufacturing, petroleum, construction and real estate. The site is about 10 minutes from the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum.

Overseas expansion and regional implications

The Egypt venture forms part of Hotel101 Global’s broader international expansion strategy as it builds a presence beyond the Philippines. The company began operating Hotel101-Madrid in Spain in March and is scheduled to open a 482-room hotel in Niseko, Hokkaido, Japan in December.

On the local partner side, IGI Developments, the property unit of IGI Holding, has been developing residential communities in Egypt since the mid-1990s and has a land bank of about 2.5 million square meters. The Cairo project adds hospitality exposure to that development base and positions Hotel101 to tap tourism and business travel demand in one of North Africa’s largest urban markets.

Shares of DoubleDragon Corp., Hotel101’s parent company, closed unchanged at P11.70 each.
