Trump rules out pardons for SBF, P. Diddy, Menendez
U.S. President Donald Trump said he does not intend to consider pardoning former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, rapper and music producer Sean Combs (P. Diddy), or former New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez.
According to an interview published Thursday by The New York Times, Trump stated that he has no plans to pardon Bankman-Fried, who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for his role in the collapse of cryptocurrency exchange FTX, as well as other well-known inmates, including Combs and Menendez.
In the same interview, Trump avoided questions about potential conflicts of interest involving the cryptocurrency industry, while once again expressing support for it.
“I got a lot of votes because I supported crypto, and I liked it,” Trump said.
As previously reported, the president and his family have ties to the crypto sector through Bitcoin mining company American Bitcoin, the platform behind the USD1 stablecoin World Liberty Financial, as well as his personal memecoin, Official Trump. However, the list of crypto-linked figures receiving pardons from Trump appears unlikely to expand.
Hopes for a зardon аade
In January, shortly after taking office, Trump pardoned Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht, and in October he granted clemency to former Binance CEO Changpeng “CZ” Zhao, who served four months in prison and whom Trump later said he did not personally know.
Bankman-Fried, however, appears left to rely solely on his legal team. In November, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit heard arguments from SBF’s lawyers challenging his conviction.
According to Cointelegraph, as of Thursday, the notice of appeal had not yet been made publicly available, and similar cases can take years to resolve. If the court rejects Bankman-Fried’s appeal, his final option would be to petition the U.S. Supreme Court for review.
