Ledger launches physical backup key for crypto wallets
Ledger, a prominent crypto hardware wallet provider, has launched the Ledger Recovery Key, an offline tool designed to help users recover their wallets without using cloud-based services.
Unlike Ledger’s previous Ledger Recover service, which was cloud-dependent and required identity verification, this new tool is fully physical and operates offline via a smart card, reports Coingelegraph.
The Ledger Recovery Key does not collect personal data and provides an added layer of security by requiring a PIN, offering a more privacy-focused solution for crypto holders. This innovative step is aimed at empowering users with complete control over their assets while minimizing exposure to online vulnerabilities.
Smart Card-Based NFC Integration with Ledger Devices
The Ledger Recovery Key exclusively supports Ledger Flex and Ledger Stax wallets and operates using secure NFC technology. Users can recover their wallets by simply tapping the smart card to their Ledger device and entering the correct PIN. This eliminates the need for intermediaries or internet connectivity during the recovery process.
Ledger emphasized that the new tool integrates Secure Element technology, similar to that used in their main wallet devices, ensuring the security of both the hardware and the recovery process. The seamless NFC connection is expected to make the recovery process significantly faster and more user-friendly compared to traditional methods.
Open Source Commitment and Security Assurance
Ledger has made the Ledger Recovery Key’s application code fully open source on GitHub and released a detailed white paper to promote transparency. The product underwent rigorous internal and external security audits, including assessments by Ledger’s own Donjon security team and independent cybersecurity firm Synacktiv. This move aims to restore trust among users after previous backlash over cloud-based recovery services. By opening its code for public scrutiny, Ledger is actively inviting the global crypto community to review and contribute to the ongoing security of the tool.
