Mastercard launches new security tool for stablecoin payments
Mastercard launches fraud controls for stablecoins

Mastercard has introduced a risk intelligence service designed to help banks and payment providers detect fraud and financial crime involving stablecoin transactions. The launch reflects growing demand for security tools as financial institutions expand their use of digital currencies for international transfers and business payments.

Highlights

  • Mastercard launches stablecoin fraud detection.
  • Borderless.xyz and Keyrails join initial rollout.
  • Global commercial availability is planned for 2027.

According to a Mastercard press release, the company unveiled Stablecoin Security at the Money20/20 USA conference. The service combines conventional payment data with blockchain analytics to identify suspicious activity before funds move between accounts or across blockchain networks. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are its initial partners.

Mastercard expands fraud detection to stablecoins

Stablecoin Security examines transaction history, the origin of funds, potential sanctions exposure, and indicators of scams. It generates risk assessments before payments are completed, allowing financial institutions to investigate transactions that may require additional scrutiny.

The service operates through an application programming interface, or API, that can connect to existing fraud detection and compliance systems. Mastercard says this approach allows banks to monitor stablecoin transfers without building separate infrastructure for managing digital asset risks.

The company cited research covering 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025. Nearly 60% involved complex, multistep transfers rather than straightforward payments between two parties. Such transactions can make it harder to establish where funds originated and identify potentially suspicious activity.

Borderless.xyz and Keyrails support initial rollout

Mastercard is working with Borderless.xyz and Keyrails to introduce the service into cross-border payment operations. Both companies participate in its Start Path Blockchain and Digital Assets program, which works with startups developing financial technology.

Borderless.xyz connects financial institutions with licensed stablecoin providers operating across more than 113 countries and supporting 72 currencies. Keyrails focuses on high-value international trade payments, including transactions involving emerging markets.

The service will launch initially in North America, with worldwide commercial availability expected in 2027. Mastercard also plans to expand its use through BVNK, the stablecoin infrastructure company it acquired in August 2026.

Security becomes central to stablecoin adoption

The launch comes as stablecoins gain wider use beyond cryptocurrency trading. Banks and payment providers are exploring them for international settlements, supplier payments, and transfers between currencies, where conventional banking processes can involve several intermediaries.

However, faster settlement does not remove the need to detect fraud, comply with sanctions, or verify the movement of funds. Complex transactions can make those responsibilities more difficult, particularly when payments cross multiple networks and jurisdictions.

Mastercard's new service addresses that challenge by extending existing risk controls to blockchain-based payments. Its effectiveness will depend on how accurately institutions can identify suspicious transactions while allowing legitimate transfers to proceed without unnecessary delays.
