  • Prediction markets, including Polymarket, saw increased trading volume and participation during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, attracting both retail and institutional interest.

Platform suspension and company response

As reported by Reuters, Polymarket says it halted trading on its international platform as a precaution while it works to restore the service after a third-party provider was compromised.

The company says it identified and fixed the issue, and adds that all affected users will be compensated. It also says the incident has been referred to law enforcement.

Growing exposure in prediction markets

Prediction markets are gaining traction as users trade contracts tied to outcomes including elections, sports, financial developments and geopolitical events.

Interest in the sector grew during the 2024 U.S. presidential election, which boosted retail participation and trading volumes, while financial institutions are increasingly seeking exposure to event-driven trading.

In our earlier article on CTOS Digital's cybersecurity incident, we outlined the company’s estimate that the breach and resulting service disruption could cut profit after tax by RM12 million and reduce revenue by RM16 million if some services stayed unavailable into late October. We also noted that each additional week of disruption could further pressure results and weigh on customer confidence, even as some analysts still held a relatively constructive view at the time.
