Jio, the telecom operator owned by India’s richest businessman, Mukesh Ambani, often referred to as a “digital evangelist,” has launched its token, JioCoin, on the Polygon network.
The launch of JioCoin is a result of Jio’s partnership with Polygon Labs, initiated to enhance customer experiences through Web3 and blockchain technology.
As of January 16, JioCoin has been integrated into the company’s proprietary browser, JioSphere, functioning as a reward mechanism for users browsing the internet via JioSphere. However, Mukesh Ambani’s Reliance Group has yet to make any official announcements regarding the token’s utility. Currently, JioCoin cannot be transferred or monetized, leading to widespread speculation about its future applications.
Kashif Raza, CEO of Bitinning, noted that Reliance Jio operates within a vast network of thousands of companies. He suggested that JioCoin could potentially serve as a currency within this ecosystem.

According to Raza, users might eventually be able to exchange JioCoins earned on JioSphere for services such as mobile top-ups or purchases at Reliance gas stations. He even referred to JioCoins as potentially “the world’s most significant rewards program.”
Jio currently serves 470 million subscribers, and Mukesh Ambani is not only the richest man in India but also in Asia. These factors make the prospects for JioCoin particularly attractive.
However, India’s regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies imposes a 30% fixed tax on income and does not account for investment losses.
Additionally, Sunil Aggarwal, author of Bitcoin Magnet, has raised concerns about the transparency and legitimacy of JioCoin’s tokenomics. He questioned whether the token has a block explorer, whether it allows users to verify transactions, and if information about its maximum and circulating supply is available.
Without clear answers to these questions or defined use cases, JioCoin remains, for now, an effective marketing strategy.
