Switzerland may create a Bitcoin reserve in the near future
Switzerland launches initiative to adopt Bitcoin as part of national reserves

Switzerland is set to decide on adopting Bitcoin (BTC) as part of its national reserve, marking a significant step toward integrating cryptocurrency into its financial ecosystem.

This initiative aligns with the global shift toward crypto acceptance, driven in part by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s pro-crypto policies, reports CoinGape.

Campaign for a Bitcoin Reserve Gains Momentum

On December 31, 2024, the Swiss Federal Chancellery launched the Bitcoin reserve proposal, aiming to amend the Swiss Federal Constitution to include BTC in the Swiss National Bank’s (SNB) portfolio. Advocates must collect 100,000 signatures by June 30, 2026, to trigger a national vote.

This is Switzerland’s second attempt to introduce Bitcoin into its reserves, following a failed initiative in 2021. The campaign has gained traction amid a global push for cryptocurrency adoption, with Trump’s administration promoting progressive crypto policies.

Crypto expert Rino Borini noted Swiss citizens’ strong affinity for Bitcoin, stating, “The Swiss appreciate Bitcoin as a store of value, much like their preference for cash, valuing security and privacy.”

Decentralized Assets for Economic Independence

Supporters argue that a Bitcoin reserve could reduce Switzerland’s reliance on foreign assets, making its financial ecosystem more resilient. However, the SNB remains skeptical, with Chair Martin Schlegel describing Bitcoin as a “niche phenomenon” and expressing concerns over its high volatility.

UBS economist Alessandro Bee echoed these concerns, warning that BTC’s unpredictability could undermine the SNB’s equity and credibility during market downturns. Despite these reservations, public sentiment appears increasingly favorable toward Bitcoin’s inclusion in the nation’s reserves.

Switzerland’s Crypto-Friendly Ecosystem

Switzerland’s progressive stance on blockchain and cryptocurrency, exemplified by its “crypto valley” and regulatory frameworks, has made it a global hub for digital finance. A successful Bitcoin reserve vote could solidify the country’s position as a leader in the crypto space, setting a precedent for other nations.

If the proposal passes, Switzerland will not only embrace Bitcoin as a reserve asset but also signal its commitment to the future of decentralized finance. This decision could pave the way for broader adoption across Europe and beyond.
