  • Trading activity is influenced by the upcoming Chuseok holiday, with local markets set to close for two days.

Exporter flows and Mideast stability drive pre-holiday dollar pressure

The USD/KRW exchange rate is influenced by South Korean exporters selling dollars and positive sentiment related to anticipated stability in the Middle East. These drivers are active ahead of the Chuseok holiday, when local markets will close for two days. Market movement reflects near-term pressure on the US Dollar versus the South Korean Won from exporter flows and geopolitical expectations.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, is skeptical about the USD/KRW rally. He notes that the pair remains capped below its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. This reflects persistent technical headwinds and lack of strong bullish conviction. Kharitonov emphasizes that short-term exporter demand is unlikely to reverse the dominant sell signals and downside momentum. He warns of a fragile bounce, highlighted by weak momentum and overbought conditions. "Any further upside seems vulnerable, and participants should brace for renewed selling pressure below ₩1,345," he says.
Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees constructive opportunities for the won amid supportive news flow. He highlights the boost from exporter flows and expectations of Middle East stability. Karapetjanc believes this backdrop sets up a favorable environment for local buyers. He is confident the market's structure will support further appreciation if positive sentiment persists. "I expect the won to retain strength, and buyers should look for multiple setups as the bullish environment for KRW remains intact," he states.
Jainam Mehta, market strategist, adopts a scenario-based outlook for USD/KRW. He sees mixed signals, with near-term volatility but clear resistance at ₩1,382. Mehta notes that the sideways bias favors tactical range trades until a decisive breakout occurs. "There may be a contrarian opportunity if the pair tests support near ₩1,345 and sentiment shifts unexpectedly," he suggests.

Short-term bullish signals clash with longer-term bearish momentum

USD/KRW trades above its 20-day moving average at ₩1,359 but remains below the 50-day (₩1,390) and 200-day (₩1,466) moving averages, highlighting short-term optimism but ongoing downward pressure in medium and long time frames. The Ichimoku Kijun support at ₩1,362 helps underpin the advance, with near-term resistance at ₩1,382 and support at the session high of ₩1,363. Daily momentum is weak, with both the MACD and ADX signaling a persistent sell-side bias. The RSI is at 41.44 with a 'Sell' reading, indicating levels below neutral. The CCI and Stochastic RSI are neutral, while Bull/Bear Power (BBP) at 12.59 confirms intraday buyer control yet shows overbought conditions. The Awesome Oscillator confirms recent upside. The pair is up ₩9.34 (0.69%) on the day, trading near the session high with intraday volatility at 1.23%. Mixed signals from momentum indicators underscore a standoff between technical buyers and the broader trend.

Earlier, analysts noted that ongoing foreign inflows and exporter-driven dollar selling continued to exert downward pressure on USD/KRW, despite some short-term volatility. The current analysis reinforces this view, highlighting that downside risk remains dominant, and traders should closely monitor the ₩1,345 level as a potential trigger for heavier selling if breached.
