Highlights

  • The South Korean won weakened as 10-year U.S. Treasury yields surpassed 5.3 percent, the highest in nearly 24 years.
  • Rising U.S. interest rates are making dollar assets more attractive, encouraging capital outflows from emerging market currencies like the won.
  • USD/KRW remains under key moving averages with most technical indicators showing intraday sell conditions and a projected range of ₩1,343 to ₩1,361, with a high probability of further declines.

Capital outflows deepen as U.S. yields hit multi-decade highs

The South Korean won has come under renewed pressure as the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield surged past 5.3 percent, reaching its highest level in nearly 24 years, according to Koreatimes Co. This notable rise in U.S. yields increases the relative attractiveness of dollar-denominated assets, encouraging capital flow out of emerging market currencies like the won. Persistent concerns over rising U.S. interest rates have therefore contributed to ongoing weakness in the South Korean currency.

Seller momentum persists as technical resistance caps recovery

Technically, USD/KRW is pinned below the MA-20, MA-50, and MA-200 levels, confirming resistance on the short, medium, and long-term charts. The Ichimoku Kijun line at ₩1,360 stands as immediate resistance for any attempt at an intraday rebound, while near-term support emerges at ₩1,343. Among momentum indicators, MACD shows continued sell bias, while ADX is neutral, suggesting trend momentum is weak. RSI, Stoch RSI, CCI, and Bull/Bear Power each register oversold or sell conditions, underscoring sustained seller dominance on the intraday timeframe. Awesome Oscillator is currently neutral, providing little directional confirmation.

Sideways trading seen as sellers limit upside risk

Looking ahead to the next 2–3 trading days, USD/KRW is expected to fluctuate within a typical volatility band from ₩1,343 to ₩1,361. The probability of an upward move above resistance at ₩1,360 is very low, with sellers maintaining clear control; a break below support at ₩1,343 would confirm renewed bearish momentum. Baseline expectations are for the pair to continue moving sideways inside this range barring a significant shift in external drivers.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, expert at Traders Union, sees the current weakness in the South Korean won as a direct result of surging U.S. Treasury yields. He believes the macro environment favors the U.S. dollar, with persistent capital flows away from emerging markets keeping sellers in control. Technical signals confirm downside momentum, especially with USD/KRW capped below major moving averages. Karapetjanc expects price action to remain range-bound unless external drivers shift. "As long as U.S. yields hold these elevated levels, the dollar has a strong structural edge against the won in the short term."

Earlier, analysts noted that persistent U.S. yield strength and macro pressures had kept upside risks for USD/KRW constrained by technical resistance. The current analysis reinforces ongoing seller dominance and highlights the ₩1,343 support level as critical for gauging the next directional move in the days ahead.
