  • Anticipation of a potential Bank of England rate hike next month boosted the pound's appeal relative to higher-yielding currencies like the Brazilian real.
  • GBP/BRL trades with short- and medium-term bullish momentum, expected to consolidate in the R$6.736 to R$6.8036 range with a very high probability of an upward move.

Pound appeal rises as UK inflation fuels rate hike bets

UK inflation data was released on Wednesday, highlighting persistent price growth in the British economy and raising market expectations for tighter monetary policy by the Bank of England, according to Globalbankingandfinance. The prospect of a potential rate hike next month increases the attractiveness of the pound compared to higher-yielding counterparts such as the Brazilian real. As investors digest the data, shifts in interest rate expectations remain the primary driver for recent movements in the currency pair.

Momentum stays bullish as price tests long-term resistance

GBP/BRL trades above the MA-20 at R$6.7397 and MA-50 at R$6.7329, while still capped below the MA-200 at R$6.8467, illustrating an important long-term resistance. The Ichimoku Kijun sits at R$6.7486 and marks immediate support, while the short-term trading corridor is defined by support at R$6.736 and resistance at R$6.8036. All key momentum indicators remain supportive: MACD, ADX, Bull/Bear Power, CCI, and Awesome Oscillator continue to register buy signals, with RSI sitting at 57.4 in buy territory. Stochastic RSI is neutral, signalling a pause in overbought conditions, yet intraday Bull/Bear Power readings indicate persistent buyer dominance.

Rangebound trade likely unless price breaks key resistance

For the near term, GBP/BRL is expected to consolidate within a volatility band of R$6.736 to R$6.8036. There is a very high probability of an upward breakout should resistance near R$6.8036 be surpassed, whereas a breakdown below R$6.736 would mark a bearish scenario, which is considered much less likely at present (less than 20% chance). The baseline scenario anticipates mostly sideways price action within this defined range, with direction depending on any breach of these key technical thresholds.

Viktoras Karapetjanc, analyst at Traders Union, notes that GBP/BRL remains well supported as UK inflation surprises have reinforced expectations for tighter policy from the Bank of England. He sees momentum signals and recent buy interest as favoring further strength as long as technical support at R$6.736 holds. Resistance at R$6.8036 is key for a potential breakout. In his view, the outlook stays constructive while global macro sentiment and policy expectations back the pound. "A breach above R$6.8036 could unlock further upside, and I remain bullish on GBP/BRL as long as key supports are intact," Karapetjanc says.

Earlier, analysts noted that GBP/BRL was constrained by broader bearish pressure despite intermittent attempts by buyers to support the pair. With technical momentum and improved UK economic data now reinforcing the case for consolidation above recent support, traders should closely monitor any sustained move beyond R$6.8036 as a potential trigger for a new bullish phase.
