Canada and Ontario are allocating nearly C$15 million to expand affordable housing supply in Bradford West Gwillimbury with a new 99-unit development. The project is aimed at seniors living with complex needs and adds supportive services as governments seek to address broader housing pressures.

Highlights

  • Bradford West Gwillimbury secured C$15 million through the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative for a 99-unit affordable housing project at 31 Frederick Street.
  • The development, operated by LOFT Community Services, targets seniors with complex needs by integrating housing, health, and social supports in a central municipal location.
  • This investment aligns with Canada's national housing strategy, including Build Canada Homes, to accelerate affordable and supportive housing for low-income households.

Funding plan for Frederick Street development

As reported by Ontario Newsroom, the funding is being provided through the Canada-Ontario Community Housing Initiative to support construction of 99 new affordable units in the Municipality of Bradford West Gwillimbury.

The development is located at 31 Frederick Street and will be operated by LOFT Community Services. It is intended to provide affordable housing for seniors with complex needs in a setting that combines housing with physical, mental health, substance use and social supports.

The announcement is made by Graydon Smith, Ontario's associate minister of municipal affairs and housing, on behalf of Housing Minister Rob Flack, alongside York-Simcoe MPP Susan Lahey and Bradford West Gwillimbury Mayor James Leduc.

Housing and community impact in Ontario

The central location is expected to connect residents with public transit and nearby essential services, including shops, medical services, schools, banks, parks and recreation centres. The governments say the project is designed to support residents' overall well-being through a sustainable and supportive living environment.

The investment also fits into wider efforts to increase affordable and supportive housing supply in Canada. Ottawa says its broader housing strategy, including Build Canada Homes, is intended to accelerate affordable homebuilding and expand transitional, supportive and community housing for low-income households.

Our earlier report on Pakistan’s push to expand bank lending for housing and other priority sectors outlined government targets to boost mortgage-style financing and speed up application processing. The piece noted plans for banks to fund tens of thousands of housing units while regulators and ministries work on reforms, risk-sharing arrangements and public-private partnerships to widen access to credit.
