British Columbia expands EV charging network with $700 million investment
BC major EV network boost

British Columbia is scaling up its public electric-vehicle charging infrastructure as adoption rises across the province and drivers seek more dependable coverage on highways and in urban centres. The plan with BC Hydro adds 3,500 new public charging ports by 2035, more than tripling the utility’s network and extending capacity into rural, northern and high-demand areas.

Highlights

  • British Columbia and BC Hydro announced a $700 million investment to add 3,500 public EV charging ports by 2035, expanding the current 917 ports.
  • Network enhancements include 200-kilowatt chargers as standard, 400-kilowatt ultra-fast chargers at high-demand sites, and user features like plug-and-charge and tap-to-pay.
  • More than 238,000 light-duty zero-emission vehicles and over 8,900 public charging ports are registered as of April 1, 2026, with the sector contributing $2.1 billion to the B.C. economy in 2025.

Charging rollout and investment plan

As reported by BC Gov News, the Province and BC Hydro are expanding British Columbia’s public charging network with a $700 million investment aimed at adding 3,500 new public charging ports by 2035. The rollout strengthens BC Hydro’s position as the province’s largest public charging provider and is intended to support rising demand from EV drivers across communities, highway corridors and major urban centres.

BC Hydro’s public fast-charging network currently includes 917 charging ports at 190 locations across the province. Under the next phase, new charging hubs are being designed around standardized layouts to improve reliability, accessibility and maintenance while supporting faster deployment of additional sites.

The expansion also introduces higher-capacity technology and upgraded customer features. BC Hydro says 200-kilowatt chargers are becoming the network standard, 400-kilowatt ultra-fast chargers are being added at selected high-demand sites, and features such as plug-and-charge capability and tap-to-pay are being incorporated into the network.

Economic and regional impact across B.C.

The buildout adds charging capacity across British Columbia to support long-distance travel, reduce wait times during peak periods and improve access where people live, work and travel. The province says larger strategic hubs, along with signature and showcase sites offering amenities such as washrooms, canopies and digital signs, are intended to make the network more consistent and user-friendly.

The plan builds on B.C.’s Electric Highway, which places fast chargers about every 150 kilometres along major highways and travel corridors. In parallel with BC Hydro’s program, applications are open for the CleanBC Go Electric Public Charger Program, which is investing about $18 million in new public fast chargers, with a focus on Indigenous, rural and northern communities as well as other high-demand areas.

Provincial data show more than 238,000 light-duty zero-emission vehicles are registered in British Columbia as of April 1, 2026, up from more than 3,000 in 2015. The province also has more than 8,900 public charging ports as of April 1, 2026, including 6,599 Level 2 ports and more than 2,300 fast-charging ports, while the zero-emission vehicle sector contributed $2.1 billion to the B.C. economy in 2025 and employed 16,400 people.

In our earlier article on Long Island Power Authority’s 'A' rating for its electric system revenue bonds, we noted that steady finances and effective cost management helped underpin continued access to capital. We also highlighted that planned renewable energy investments and grid resilience upgrades were viewed as supportive of long-term reliability and the broader energy transition.
