Joint declaration drives housing and investment agenda

As reported by Canada.ca, citing Global Affairs Canada, the Vancouver meeting focuses on shared priorities including international development, economic partnerships, affordable housing and regional security.

Anand welcomes progress in implementing the joint declaration agreed by Prime Minister Mark Carney and His Highness the Aga Khan in March 2026, and stresses the need to maintain momentum. She also points to the Generations multi-generational housing initiative, led by the Ismaili Council for Canada, as a successful model as the federal government continues to prioritize affordable housing.

The two sides also discuss the housing partnership announced under the joint declaration and welcome a memorandum of understanding between Build Canada Homes and the Ismaili Council for Canada. The agreement is aimed at advancing affordable multi-generational housing and community infrastructure projects across Canada.

Anand also highlights continued cooperation through the FinDev Canada-Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development memorandum of understanding, which sets out a shared commitment to explore investment opportunities in infrastructure, renewable energy, agriculture and financial services.

Broader development ties support Canada strategy

The discussions also cover the Aga Khan Development Network's long-standing role in regions facing complex challenges, including Syria, as well as its development partnerships in Pakistan and East Africa. Anand expresses appreciation for the network's work to improve quality of life through programs addressing social and economic pressures in local communities.

The meeting also serves to reinforce Canada's broader relationship with the Ismaili community at home and abroad. Anand recognizes the Canadian Ismaili community's contributions through volunteerism, civic engagement, philanthropy and investment, and reaffirms Canada's commitment to deepen collaboration with the Ismaili Imamat and AKDN on stability, resilience and sustainable development.
