Highlights

  • Coordinated US-Japan intervention used euro-funded yen purchases to stabilize the yen and avoid weakening the dollar against other currencies.
  • Bank of Japan kept its benchmark rate at 1.00%, further supporting yen stability and contributing to a sharp rally versus major pairs.
  • GBP/JPY remains bearish, trading below key technical averages with strong downside momentum and an expected range of ¥209.5 to ¥212.86.

Yen rallies after coordinated US-Japan action and BOJ rate pause

The coordinated intervention by the United States and Japan in the currency markets marked a significant direct action, with both governments confirming purchases of yen to counter disorderly movements and defend financial stability, according to Bloomberg. By reportedly utilizing euros rather than dollars for its yen purchases, the US Treasury helped maintain overall dollar strength and avoid spillovers into other currency pairs. Following these events, the Bank of Japan’s decision to keep its benchmark rate steady at 1.00% has provided additional support for the yen's stability, while the interventions resulted in a sharp rally in the Japanese currency against the Pound Sterling and other major pairs.

Downside signals strengthen as major averages and momentum align

Technical analysis shows GBP/JPY trading below MA-20, MA-50, and MA-200 levels. The Ichimoku Kijun line at ¥212.46 represents immediate resistance, which caps any upside attempts. MACD and ADX both indicate strong sell conditions, while the RSI sits at 33.74, still above oversold territory. Stoch RSI and CCI are neutral, suggesting the absence of clear reversal signals, and Bull/Bear Power reflects an intraday sell bias.

Sideways trading expected barring breakout from current volatility band

In the short term, GBP/JPY is likely to trade within a volatility band of ¥209.5 to ¥212.86 over the next two to three sessions. A sustained break above the ¥212.46 Kijun resistance would be needed to open a bullish scenario, while a clear decline below ¥209.5 would accelerate bearish momentum. The base case expects continued sideways action near the current price with limited upside pressure.

Anton Kharitonov, expert at Traders Union, sees GBP/JPY under lasting pressure from recent coordinated interventions and lackluster technical structure. He believes current price action below key moving averages and strong sell signals on indicators reduce the chance for a meaningful rebound. The sideways bias remains intact unless ¥212.46 is regained. "Until GBP/JPY reclaims resistance or interventions subside, I remain defensively positioned and see limited upside."
