Sweden opposition sets green industry reset ahead of election
Sweden eyes green revival

With Sweden heading into a closely watched parliamentary election on Sept. 13, opposition leader Magdalena Andersson is positioning a return to green industrial growth as a central economic priority. She argues the country can regain momentum in batteries, steel and mining despite recent setbacks that have shaken confidence in Sweden’s clean industry ambitions.

Highlights

  • Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson pledges a centre-left industrial revival focused on green transition, leveraging Sweden's hydroelectric surplus and established industries.
  • Recent setbacks include Northvolt's bankruptcy and Stegra's rescue, raising concerns over Sweden's green industry pace and execution despite Andersson's optimism on fossil-free steel and green mining.
  • A TV4/Novus poll shows the centre-left bloc's lead narrowing to under three percentage points, with Social Democrat support falling to 26%, complicating coalition prospects ahead of the election.

Election pitch centres on industrial revival

As reported by Financial Times, Andersson says a centre-left government led by her would seek to make Sweden a pioneer of green industry again and send a message that the country is open for business. The opposition Social Democrat leader says Sweden still has the potential to lead the global green transition through established industrial groups and new companies, supported by large amounts of excess hydroelectric power in the north.

Her pitch comes after a difficult period for Sweden’s green industry drive. Battery maker Northvolt has gone bankrupt, while green steel start-up Stegra has required a rescue by the Wallenberg family, setbacks that have raised doubts about the pace and execution of major industrial projects.

Andersson says Sweden has strengths in fossil-free steel production and green mining, and argues the country remains well placed to build new industries even after what she describes as over-optimism in battery expansion. She also backs Sweden’s long-standing model of co-operation between business and labour, presenting it as a foundation for industrial competitiveness and social stability.

Poll pressure and broader policy stakes

The Social Democrats hold a lead in opinion polls ahead of the vote, but that margin narrows as campaigning intensifies. A TV4/Novus poll on Wednesday puts the centre-left bloc less than three percentage points ahead of the ruling centre-right coalition, while Social Democrat support falls to 26%, its lowest level since the last election cycle.

The final result may depend in part on whether the Liberals, the smallest centre-right party, clear the threshold to enter parliament. Andersson declines to spell out how she would build a coalition after the election, saying Sweden’s eight-party system leaves room for different governing arrangements, including the possibility of a minority administration led by her party alone.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson argues she would depend on more radical left-wing parties, a claim Andersson rejects as she calls for broader long-term agreements across party lines. Beyond domestic economics, she says Sweden should remain an active Nato member, deepen European co-operation and continue backing Ukraine, arguing that developments there carry major consequences for Europe’s security and influence.

British Columbia’s North Coast Transmission Line expansion is moving ahead to relieve grid bottlenecks in the north as electricity demand from mining, LNG and ports outpaces existing transmission capacity. Our earlier coverage outlined how the multi-phase project aims to more than double corridor capacity by 2032, unlock major industrial developments and jobs, and widen access to clean power with federal support and First Nations co-ownership agreements in progress.
