Benapole-Petrapole trade suspension disrupts cross-border cargo flows for eight days
Cross-border cargo movement through the Benapole-Petrapole land port corridor is set to pause from 17 to 24 October during the Durga Puja period. Highlights
- Benapole-Petrapole land port suspended cargo trade in phases from 17–24 October due to Durga Puja and government holidays, resuming 25 October.
- Despite cargo shutdown, passenger movement persists with heightened security, anticipating increased traffic during the festival period.
- Benapole port typically handles 300–350 truckloads of Indian imports and 100 truckloads exported daily, making the eight-day closure disruptive for bilateral industrial raw material flows.
Holiday shutdown schedule across both ports
As reported by The Business Standard, import and export operations through the Benapole-Petrapole land port are being suspended in phases on the two sides of the border because of Durga Puja and government holidays in Bangladesh. Badruzzaman Boni, general secretary of the Benapole C&F Agents Staff Association, says Petrapole port authorities informed their Bangladeshi counterparts in writing about the closure. At India’s Petrapole port, trade remains suspended from 17 to 21 October, while import-export activity at Benapole is closed from 20 to 24 October. Cargo trade is scheduled to resume on 25 October morning.
Benapole Land Port Acting Director Ruhul Amin says cargo loading, unloading, clearance and customs assessment continue as usual on 18 and 19 October. Indian truck drivers are also allowed to return home with empty trucks after unloading their goods.
Trade volumes and passenger movement remain in focus
Passenger movement through the two ports remains normal despite the halt in cargo trade, according to Saifur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Benapole Immigration Police. Police have stepped up security measures in anticipation of heavier passenger traffic during the festival period.Benapole port sources say around 300 to 350 truckloads of goods arrive from India each day, while about 100 truckloads are exported to India. The corridor is a key route for bilateral trade, particularly for imports of industrial raw materials, making even a temporary suspension significant for cross-border supply flows.
