Canada signs security information pact with Greece to support defence and industry cooperation
Canada, Greece boost defence ties

Canada is expanding its strategic ties with Greece through a new agreement that allows the secure exchange of classified information between the two countries. The pact is designed to support cooperation in defence, trade, innovation and advanced technologies, while opening potential opportunities for Canadian businesses and workers.

Highlights

  • Canada and Greece signed the General Security of Information Agreement in Athens, enabling secure classified information sharing for defence and weapons systems cooperation.
  • The pact is expected to expand market access and strengthen the competitive position of Canadian defence firms in Greece, specifically in advanced technologies and maritime security.
  • By establishing common security standards, the agreement facilitates joint work on maritime intelligence, infrastructure protection, and supports broader economic and strategic cooperation under CETA.

Athens agreement strengthens bilateral cooperation

As reported by Government of Canada, citing the Government of Canada, the General Security of Information Agreement is signed in Athens by Sonya Thissen, Canada's ambassador to Greece and high commissioner to Cyprus, and Major General Emmanouil Chatzis of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff. The signing takes place in the presence of Greek Defence Minister Nikolaos Dendias and General Dimitrios Choupis, chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff.

The agreement marks a further step in Ottawa's effort to deepen cooperation with Greece, which it describes as a valued and like-minded European Union partner. By establishing rules for the secure handling of classified information, the pact supports collaboration in sensitive areas including defence intelligence and technical data linked to weapons systems.

Canada and Greece already maintain trade, investment and innovation ties, alongside broader political links rooted in shared democratic values. As maritime nations, the two countries also share interests in naval security, coastal infrastructure protection and maritime intelligence.

Industry access and economic implications

Once the agreement enters into force, it is expected to deepen cooperation between Canada and Greece as North Atlantic Treaty Organization partners, including in operations, equipment sharing and broader Atlantic priorities. The arrangement also aims to expand market access for Canadian companies and strengthen their competitive position in Greece.

Canadian officials say the pact can also facilitate work with Greece's specialized workforce and advanced defence technologies, while improving joint efforts in maritime situational awareness, infrastructure protection and responses to transnational threats. The framework may support commercial activity by ensuring security standards for data-sharing between authorized contractors and government institutions.

The deal builds on the wider economic relationship between the two countries, which are both participants in the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement. That broader framework already supports market access, lower tariffs and investment flows, and the new security agreement is positioned as a tool to reinforce cooperation in strategic sectors such as aerospace and advanced technologies.

Canada’s cross-border travel volumes continued to rise heading into autumn, with preliminary September arrivals by air and automobile reaching 5.3 million and showing broad-based growth year over year. Our publication previously noted that returning Canadian travellers, U.S. visitors, and overseas arrivals all increased, supporting ongoing momentum for tourism activity and related economic sectors.
