Novo Nordisk Foundation commits €80M to launch QuNorth quantum initiative
The Novo Nordisk Foundation, together with the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), has committed €80 million to launch QuNorth, a new Nordic quantum initiative designed to strengthen the region’s technological leadership.
Based in Copenhagen, QuNorth will be jointly owned by the two organizations and will oversee the acquisition and operation of Magne—expected to become the world’s most powerful commercial quantum computer. Construction of the system will begin in autumn 2025, with operations scheduled to start by late 2026 or early 2027. The initiative seeks to ensure that Denmark and the broader Nordic region, long recognized for cutting-edge research in quantum science, do not fall behind due to limited access to next-generation systems.
Advancing the Nordic quantum ecosystem
QuNorth is envisioned as a cornerstone for consolidating Denmark’s role in quantum innovation, bridging research, industry, and international collaboration. The project reflects the Novo Nordisk Foundation’s broader strategy to advance AI, quantum computing, green technologies, and life sciences—all sectors critical to Europe’s competitiveness.
By offering direct access to Magne, the initiative will empower Nordic researchers and companies to test and scale applications in fields ranging from advanced simulations to secure communications. Supporters argue that positioning Copenhagen as a hub for quantum excellence will attract global talent, encourage cross-border partnerships, and accelerate commercialization of breakthroughs.
Novo Nordisk’s global leadership in health and innovation
While best known as a pharmaceutical powerhouse, Novo Nordisk’s foundation is using its resources to push beyond medicine into frontier technologies. Novo Nordisk itself specializes in treatments for diabetes, obesity, hemophilia, and endocrine disorders, with blockbuster drugs such as Ozempic. Founded in 1923 and reshaped through a 1989 merger, the company has grown into a multinational giant with operations in 80 countries and product distribution to more than 170.
By January 2025, its market capitalization surpassed €350 billion, making it the largest company in the EU. Through initiatives like QuNorth, the foundation seeks to align its mission of combating chronic diseases with the broader goal of securing Nordic leadership in science, technology, and innovation.
