England is moving to a new higher education finance model as applications open for the Lifelong Learning Entitlement for courses beginning between 1 January and 31 August 2027. Highlights
- Student Loans Company opens Lifelong Learning Entitlement funding applications for England courses beginning between 1 January and 31 August 2027.
- Eligible students can access standard tuition fee loans up to £39,160 for 480 credits, plus maintenance loans and additional targeted support.
- LLE consolidates previous funding schemes, extends to select postgraduate courses, and aligns repayments with Repayment Plan 5 thresholds to support flexible, lifelong education.
Funding rollout for 2027 starters
As reported by GOV.UK, the Student Loans Company says students in England planning to start undergraduate and certain postgraduate courses between 1 January and 31 August 2027 can now apply for funding under the Lifelong Learning Entitlement, or LLE.The new system requires applicants to use a GOV.UK One Login account. Applications for the 2027/28 academic year are due to go live in Spring 2027.
Under the scheme, learners may be able to access tuition fee loans, maintenance loans and additional support such as grants or allowances for those on low incomes, with disabilities or with children. The amount available depends on the number of credits studied, and students who have not previously received student finance can get a standard tuition fee loan entitlement of up to £39,160, equivalent to about 480 credits.
Policy shift for flexible study
The LLE is creating a single, more flexible funding system intended to help learners fit study around work and family commitments. It also brings some courses previously funded through the Advanced Learner Loan system into the new structure, while covering selected postgraduate qualifications including healthcare and teaching courses.Derek Ross, executive director for HE/FE reform, says the entitlement is a significant reform to higher education funding that gives people more flexibility to access education throughout their working lives and build skills to support economic growth. Loans only need to be repaid once a student has finished or left a course or individual module, in line with Repayment Plan 5 earning thresholds.
