U.S. data center building hits $51 billion

Joseph Politano reports that U.S. data center construction has reached a new record, rising to an annual rate of nearly $51 billion according to official data. This figure covers only physical data center facilities and excludes the cost of computing equipment inside.

Spending on data center construction is up 28% over the last year and shows a 268% increase since the launch of ChatGPT.

Politano previously reported that U.S. imports of large computers set a record $340 billion annual pace, rising 130% over the past year. The surge in imports has coincided with increased demand for AI capabilities.
