U.S. adds 172,000 jobs in May

Heather Long reports that the U.S. economy added 172,000 jobs in May, far surpassing the expected 88,000 gain.

The unemployment rate remained steady at 4.3%. Hospitality led job creation with 70,000 new roles, followed by local government, which added 55,000 positions. Revisions for April and March showed an additional 93,000 jobs compared to previous estimates.

Earlier this year, Heather Long reported that U.S. job openings outnumbered unemployed workers for the first time since June 2025. In April, she also noted that PCE inflation reached 3.8 percent, the highest since May 2023. The latest job gains come as analysts continue to track both labor market and inflation trends.
