U.S. inflation rises sharply in May

Heather Long reports that U.S. inflation surged to 4.2 percent year-over-year in May, marking the highest level in three years and rising from 2.4 percent in February before the war in Iran.

According to Long, higher gas and energy prices were responsible for 60 percent of the increase, with shelter and food—especially restaurants—also contributing. The monthly inflation rate rose by 0.5 percent.

Long previously reported that U.S. PCE inflation reached 3.8 percent in April, the highest since May 2023. Core PCE inflation for the month stood at 3.3 percent. She also noted that U.S. job openings outnumbered unemployed workers for the first time since June 2025.
