Alphabet remains under pressure as AI investment concerns overshadow strong cloud growth
Alphabet continues to face investor skepticism despite another quarter of impressive operating performance. Google Cloud delivered its fastest growth on record, driven by accelerating enterprise demand for AI infrastructure, while Search and YouTube advertising remained resilient. However, management's decision to raise 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195-205 billion, up from $180-190 billion, shifted the market's attention away from earnings and toward the cost of maintaining AI leadership.

Investors await proof that AI spending will generate higher returns
The debate surrounding Alphabet is no longer about AI demand but about the pace of monetization. Management expects infrastructure investment to remain elevated as the company expands data center capacity and AI computing resources, with capital spending expected to increase further in 2027. While the investment supports long-term competitiveness, it is also likely to pressure free cash flow and depreciation expenses over the coming quarters. Investors will be looking for continued acceleration in Google Cloud and Gemini adoption to justify the unprecedented level of spending.
Technical picture remains vulnerable below key resistance
The daily chart continues to reflect a corrective structure. Following the post earnings selloff, Alphabet has been unable to regain the $340-350 resistance zone, while the short-term moving averages continue to trend lower. This suggests that sellers remain in control despite the recent stabilization. A sustained recovery above $350 would improve the technical outlook and expose the $360-380 area. Until then, the risks continue to favor another test of support around $320, followed by the psychologically important $300 level if broader market sentiment deteriorates.
Fed decision and geopolitical risks could amplify volatility
This week's Federal Reserve meeting, second quarter GDP and Core PCE inflation data remain the primary macro catalysts for technology stocks. At the same time, the conflict in the Middle East continues to represent an important source of uncertainty. Although the recent easing of tensions has reduced immediate pressure on energy markets, any renewed escalation could lift oil prices, strengthen inflation expectations and increase volatility across high-growth technology shares. Against that backdrop, Alphabet's elevated AI investment program is likely to remain under close scrutiny as investors weigh long-term growth against near-term profitability.
However, as I warned in Alphabet sinks as higher AI spending overshadows strong earnings, the decline may create buying opportunities, though not necessarily at current levels.
