Alphabet shares came under heavy pressure despite another quarter of better-than-expected financial results. While revenue and cloud growth comfortably exceeded market expectations, investors reacted negatively after management raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195 billion to $205 billion from the previous $180 billion to $190 billion.

Management attributed the increase to exceptionally strong demand for AI infrastructure, but the market viewed the higher spending as a near-term risk to free cash flow and profitability.
Cloud momentum remains exceptionally strong
The underlying business continues to perform well. Quarterly revenue climbed to $119.8 billion, while Google Cloud delivered another record quarter with revenue surging 82% year over year as enterprise demand for AI infrastructure accelerated. Search advertising and YouTube also posted solid growth, reinforcing management's view that investments in Gemini, AI Overviews and enterprise AI services are already contributing to stronger monetization across the ecosystem.
Macro headwinds add to valuation pressure
The broader macro backdrop has become less favorable for high-growth technology stocks. Higher oil prices driven by escalating tensions in the Middle East have renewed inflation concerns, while resilient U.S. labor market data continue to support elevated Treasury yields. As a result, investors have become more selective toward companies committing to massive AI infrastructure spending, preferring stronger near-term cash generation over aggressive capacity expansion.
Technical picture points to growing downside risks
The hourly chart reflects a sharp deterioration in sentiment following the earnings release. Alphabet has broken below the recent consolidation range and accelerated toward the $320 support area after sellers reacted to the revised capital spending outlook. Unless buyers quickly reclaim the $325 to $330 region, downside pressure could extend toward the psychologically important $310 to $300 zone. As I noted in the article Alphabet slips toward key support as AI leadership faces renewed selling pressure, the long-term outlook remains constructive thanks to the company's leadership in AI, cloud computing and digital advertising. However, in the near term, elevated capital expenditure plans are likely to remain the dominant driver of market sentiment.
