Heather Long reports that there are now more job openings than unemployed workers in the U.S. for the first time since June 2025.
According to her, April saw 7,618,000 job openings compared to 7,373,000 unemployed people. Long adds that this does not necessarily mean the job market is strong or that companies are actively hiring.
Long previously reported that U.S. PCE inflation rose to 3.8 percent in April, the highest since May 2023. In March, she noted the U.S. hiring rate reached 3.5%, the strongest in nearly two years. The recent data adds to a series of mixed labor and inflation signals this spring.
