Rents in Shanghai and Shenzhen drove net increase, Michael Pettis notes
China rents rise in top four cities

Michael Pettis, economist, professor of finance, nonresident senior fellow, author, macroeconomic analyst at Peking University; Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, reports that rents in China's four first-tier cities—Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen—have increased for six consecutive months since March.

Pettis highlights that more than 100% of the net rent increase took place in Shanghai and Shenzhen, while rents in Beijing were not a major contributor to overall growth.

Pettis has previously commented on China’s foreign trade imbalances, referencing debate over export surpluses and currency policy. He has also addressed U.S. and Venezuelan resistance to Chevron’s attempts to control Venezuelan oil reserves. His recent observations on rental trends follow these earlier analyses of international economic developments.
