Voucher spending and affordable unit costs are similar over 50 years, Paul Williams notes
Affordable housing unit and voucher costs compared

Paul Williams compared the costs of $1 million affordable housing units, which last approximately 50 years, to housing vouchers valued at $20,000 per year, or $1 million over the same period.

Williams agreed that vouchers are a good option and may even be preferable, but stated that cost should not be the deciding factor.

Williams has previously identified rent nonpayment as a significant barrier to housing investment in Washington, DC. In a recent commentary, he welcomed Janeese’s attention to the issue, calling it key to increasing the city’s housing supply. Further details on his perspectives can be found in his analysis of rental challenges.
