Edward Dowd: Hyperscalers compared to ILECs, neo clouds to CLECs in market context
Dowd compares hyperscalers and neo clouds

Hyperscalers are being compared to incumbent local exchange carriers (ILECs) while neo clouds are likened to competitive local exchange carriers (CLECs), according to Edward Dowd, founding partner at OceanSquare Asset Mgmt and former BlackRock executive. Dowd also draws parallels between NVDA and companies like CSCO, Lucent, and Nortel, stating that the former group ran capital expenditures well above trend, while the latter is now facing challenges accessing capital markets at reasonable costs. He adds that a similar situation occurred in 2000, when ILECs included ATT.

Dowd recently disputed Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang’s statement about CoreWeave’s falling cost of capital, citing widening bond spreads in a prior commentary on CoreWeave’s capital dynamics. He has also suggested that the semiconductor sector reached its peak in June due to debt-driven speculative demand, as noted in earlier remarks on the market’s signal. These observations continue his critical focus on risks in technology investment and funding.
