IBM stock loses momentum as AI updates fail to prevent a pullback
IBM pulls back despite fresh AI updates

IBM is starting to lose some of the upside momentum built during its recent recovery. Despite continued progress across its AI business, the next few sessions could become an important test of how durable that rebound really is.

IBM introduced new tools for managing and securing enterprise AI agents at TechXchange 2026. The company expanded HashiCorp Vault capabilities to improve access control for autonomous systems and updated watsonx Orchestrate, allowing businesses to manage AI agents across ecosystems including Microsoft, Google and Amazon.

IBM Consulting also announced a broader partnership with Google Cloud. Integrating the IBM Consulting Advantage platform with Gemini models is intended to help enterprise clients accelerate Oracle system modernization and the deployment of AI agents.

Losing the 200-day SMA puts $244–242 support in focus

The scenario outlined previously played out in full. IBM stock reached the $242 target and went on to test resistance near $255.50.

Buyers, however, failed to push through that level. In premarket trading on October 28, the stock is slipping below the 200-day SMA near $250 and testing $247.50.

The base case for today is a continuation of the pullback toward the $244–242 support zone. RSI (14) has moved into overbought territory, limiting the scope for further upside.

A recovery and sustained move back above the 200-day SMA would invalidate this scenario. In that case, attention would shift back to resistance near $255.50.

Fed policy signals could reshape the short-term outlook

The Federal Reserve will announce its interest rate decision today, October 28, at 2:00 p.m. New York time. Markets largely expect rates to remain unchanged, but any surprise in the decision or the Fed’s comments could trigger sharp moves across U.S. equities.

For IBM, the recent post-earnings recovery adds another layer of risk. With the stock technically overbought and a major macro event approaching, volatility could increase considerably into the close.
