Meta launches Seller app to expand Facebook Marketplace
Meta expands Marketplace with Seller app

Meta has introduced a standalone app designed to help merchants manage sales on Facebook Marketplace, marking its latest effort to strengthen its position in online commerce. The new app, called Seller, combines listing management, buyer communications, and AI-powered tools into a single platform as the company looks to compete more directly with established e-commerce marketplaces.

Highlights

  • Meta launched the Seller app for Facebook Marketplace merchants.
  • The app includes AI listing tools and inventory management.
  • Marketplace hosts around 430 million listings each month.
  • Meta also introduced free Facebook Verified profiles.

According to Reuters, the Seller app is now available on Apple's App Store for U.S. users aged 18 and older. It synchronizes automatically with existing Facebook Marketplace accounts, allowing users to access their current listings, messages, and sales history without starting from scratch. Meta is also testing a web version for users who download the app.

AI tools aim to simplify online selling

The launch reflects Meta's broader push to improve the experience for individuals and small businesses that use Facebook Marketplace. The platform now hosts approximately 430 million item listings each month worldwide, making it one of the largest consumer marketplaces on the internet.

Seller introduces several features intended to streamline the selling process. AI-powered tools assist users in creating listings, while a unified inbox consolidates conversations with buyers across Marketplace. The app also includes inventory management functions and performance analytics designed to help merchants monitor sales activity and optimize listings.

Marketplace itself was introduced a decade ago after buying and selling activity expanded rapidly within Facebook Groups. Since then, Meta has generated revenue through promoted listings while gradually expanding commerce-related services across its platforms.

Meta expands its Marketplace ecosystem

The Seller app follows several recent product launches aimed at strengthening Facebook's ecosystem. In May, Meta introduced Forum, a dedicated app for Facebook Groups users, separating community features from the main Facebook application.

Alongside Seller, Meta also announced Facebook Verified, a free verification badge intended to confirm that a profile belongs to a real person. The verification process relies on selfie-based identity checks, part of the company's broader effort to improve authenticity and reduce fraudulent activity across Marketplace and Facebook more broadly.

The combination of merchant tools and identity verification suggests Meta is focusing not only on expanding commerce but also on increasing trust between buyers and sellers.

Competition in social commerce intensifies

The launch highlights Meta's ambition to become a larger player in digital commerce as competition with platforms such as eBay continues to intensify. By offering dedicated merchant software instead of relying solely on Marketplace inside Facebook, the company is seeking to improve seller productivity while encouraging greater transaction volume.

With AI becoming increasingly central to online retail and trust remaining critical for peer-to-peer marketplaces, Seller represents another step in Meta's strategy to turn Facebook into a more comprehensive commerce platform.
