Highlights

  • Gold demand rose as central banks increased reserves by 42% in Q3 2026, adding 321 tonnes to holdings.
  • The decline in the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields after the election improved gold's relative attractiveness for institutional investors.
  • Gold remains under pressure below key moving averages, consolidating in a $4,018 to $4,141 range with mixed momentum signals.

Central banks drive institutional demand as yields and dollar retreat

The drop in U.S. dollar and Treasury yields following the U.S. election results has been a primary macro factor, improving gold’s appeal relative to other assets, according to Investing.com. Data from Tradingnews showed central banks increased their gold reserves by 42% in Q3 2026, adding 321 tonnes, which points to substantial institutional demand and ongoing portfolio diversification. FXStreet noted that the Democratic victory in Congress further weighed on U.S. bond yields and the dollar, supporting a constructive backdrop, while the approach of U.S. nonfarm payrolls data introduced new caution and volatility in gold markets.

Mixed momentum with resistance capping as oscillators turn neutral

On the technical front, XAU trades below its MA-20 and MA-50 on the hourly chart, remaining well under the long-term MA-200 set at $4,350. The Ichimoku Kijun sits at $4,088, currently acting as immediate resistance. Momentum indicators paint a mixed picture: MACD and ADX continue to indicate selling strength, but all oscillators—RSI at 48.66, Stoch RSI at 66.09, and CCI at –51.24—are firmly neutral, with no clear signs of overbought or oversold levels. Bull/Bear Power remains mildly positive at 4.79, highlighting some buyer activity, while the Awesome Oscillator holds a neutral reading as price consolidates within today's range.

Consolidation favored amid resistance test and bullish breakout risk

For the next two to three trading days, XAU is expected to remain within a typical volatility band between $4,018 and $4,141. There is a 62% probability of an upward move within this range, while the chance of a downside breakout is less likely at 38%. The baseline expectation is for gold to consolidate, with a potential bullish scenario unfolding if price can decisively clear immediate resistance; a bearish scenario could develop if support near the lower boundary gives way.

Anton Kharitonov, analyst at Traders Union, sees a flat bias in gold as supportive macro factors offset technical weakness. He notes that central bank accumulation and a softer dollar are constructive, but price remains capped below key moving averages. The analyst stresses that indicators are mixed and market caution is high ahead of U.S. payrolls. "Base case remains consolidation; until gold reclaims $4,088, upside conviction is limited."

Earlier, analysts noted that strong energy prices and shifting Federal Reserve expectations were keeping gold rangebound amid persistent inflation concerns. The most pertinent risk to monitor now is whether gold's consolidation inside the $4,018–$4,141 band is disrupted by upcoming U.S. nonfarm payrolls data or further central bank accumulation, either of which could spark a decisive directional move.
