Nano Nuclear Energy Inc. announced that the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has formally accepted its application, initiating the licensing process for the company’s KRONOS MMR system at the University of Illinois.
This development establishes KRONOS MMR as the first commercially-ready microreactor system to reach this regulatory milestone. The formal review process marks a significant advancement for next-generation nuclear deployment in the U.S. academic sector, potentially setting a precedent for future commercial microreactor projects nationwide.
The NRC previously began its review of Nano Nuclear Energy’s microreactor project in partnership with the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, advancing U.S. nuclear innovation at the academic level (NRC microreactor review). Nano Nuclear Energy has also announced a microreactor strategy in the United Arab Emirates to support energy diversification efforts (UAE microreactor plan). The company continues to position its technology in both domestic and international markets.
