S&P Global reports that deals of $10 billion or more are helping to offset a slowdown in M&A transactions. Speakers shared this insight during a recent SPG Market Intelligence webinar.
Deal counts in 2021 regularly reached between 13,000 and 15,000 per quarter globally. In the second quarter of 2024, global deal counts were fewer than 10,000, according to Joe.
SPGI is trading at $430.48, sitting above the MA-20 ($426.31) and MA-50 ($421.01) but well below the MA-200 ($458.96). This setup highlights near-term firmness but ongoing long-term pressure from sellers, while the Ichimoku Kijun at $421.18 now acts as immediate support. Near-term support is clustered between $421.01 (MA-50) and $426.31 (MA-20), with key support at $421.18 (Ichimoku Kijun). Resistance appears at $434.13 (MA-100, EMA) for the near term and $458.96 (MA-200) as a key longer-term barrier.
Momentum signals remain mixed on D1: MACD shows a mild buy reading, but ADX is neutral at 13.68, hinting at a weak underlying trend. The RSI is balanced at 50.56, but Stoch RSI is fully oversold (0.00) and CCI is neutral, suggesting indecision. BBP’s high positive reading (0.87, "Overbought") indicates recent buyer dominance, though the weekly tone is defensive. SPGI has fallen $20.36 (4.52%) from last week's close of $450.84, now resting at the very bottom of its weekly range. Weekly volatility stands at 7.94%, and the price action represents a sharp, steady retreat from last week's highs.
For the coming week, the expected range is $415 to $445, keeping the price between the 52-week low of $380.79 and high of $579.05, with the corridor reflecting recent volatility and technical levels. Based on W1 indicators (all in "Sell" territory) and W1 MA forecasts, the probability of a meaningful price increase is very low (less than 20%), making further downside more likely. The baseline scenario is sideways movement between nearby support and resistance, while a bullish turn would require a decisive break above $434.13, and a bearish extension could see the price push below $421. Key risks are persistent negative weekly momentum and lack of strong short-term trend signals.
Previously it was reported that S&P Global faced ongoing downside pressure with a cautious outlook as technical signals pointed toward further weakness. As market dynamics evolve, traders should focus on identifying new momentum shifts that could signal either stabilization or deeper declines in the stock.
