Hawaiian Electric launches drone inspections

Hawaiian Electric has launched the use of unmanned aircrafts (drones) to conduct aerial inspections of its electrical infrastructure in wildfire risk areas through December 2026.

On the island of Oahu, the company has engaged Wiggins Tech to carry out these drone inspections as part of its ongoing wildfire safety strategy. The effort is aimed at enhancing operational safety and asset monitoring as the company addresses wildfire risks in its service area.

Hawaiian Electric has recently dealt with outages in its service area, including a power cut affecting about 1,930 customers in Wahiawa. In another incident, the company reported a power loss that impacted 2,460 customers in Makaha. Crews were deployed to restore service following both events.
